I heard of cold showers .. but !!
B-R-R-R … brave bathing birdies! Murray spied them in the Ponoka area: “These are Bohemian Waxwings enjoying a bath in ice water. They just love to bathe at anytime. We had oodles of them a month ago but zero in town now - they are on somewhat of a northward migration at this time of year”.
DID YOU KNOW? Most birds that migrate, arrive in the spring. They come here to find a mate, have babies, and then when it gets cold – high tail it out of here for warmer climates. But Bohemian Waxwings arrive when winter “starts”. In Alberta, they breed in our northern forests and along the mountains south to Waterton National Park. You may have seen their flocks – literally & incredibly up to the thousands. Waxwings are the only birds in the world that have red wax-like droplets on the tips of their secondary wing feathers. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may help to look attractive to their mates.
