How was your summer vacation? Cheryl-Lynn and her family sure had a great time! Welcome to Manitoulin Island, specifically: Carter Bay on Lake Huron. Surf’s up! Check out the great body-surfing waves.
Below are: Jeremy, Carly, Dione, Alexa, Jack, and Chrisinda. Uh,..where’s Cheryl-Lynn?
Those happy humans were careful to watch for the Piping Plover, a small bird that lives on lakeshores, river sandbars, and ocean coasts. As is evident by the sign below, the Piping Plover has been assessed as an endangered species by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, and is listed under the Species at Risk Act. Cheryl-Lynn said it was a real treat to see(from a safe distance) the Plovers thriving.
Here’s a pic I found of the proud Piping Plover. They blend in so well - which is actually a great defense against predators. But that can also be fatal. Threats include being trampled by humans and big animals. BELOW THIS PICTURE, check out its tracks in the sand.
Plovers walk with their feet turned inward, leaving a distinctive footprint on the beach that helps researchers and conservationists determine if plovers are present at a site. http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/nature/eep-sar/index.aspx
