Electrifying!

Electrifying!

The glorious Northern Lights ~~ talk about being in the right place at the right time!    Soren was.    “The photo was taken at around 9:30pm on Valentine’s Day, between the golf course and the airport in Vegreville.   I watched the show for about 30 minutes.   They were so bright it was like having a full moon!”

DID YOU KNOW?    Aurora Borealis – or Northern Lights are caused by solar winds (streams of charged particles from the Sun).    These charged particles are attracted to our magnetic field.    I’ll back up a step:  Imagine a giant bar magnet inside the Earth.    The ends are where the magnetic north and south poles are and they attract all those charged particles.    And when the solar winds hit our atmosphere (at about a million miles an hour), they erupt in spectacular displays of light.    It takes about 40 hours for these particles to strike the Earth’s atmosphere.

A group at the University of Alberta has a website and if you register, you will get Aurora Borealis alerts for free.    The goups monitor’s the Earth’s geomagnetic activity  – that means they notice when anything disrupts the Earth’s magnetic field like solar winds.    So when they see such activity they send out alerts about the possibility of seeing Aurora Borealis.    Click here for more information:
