The moon? Kind of!
When you hear the word wonderland .. the picture above might not come to mind — but what you are looking at IS a volcanic wonderland in Idaho. Welcome to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Ian’s perspective is from 1 thousand feet above ground. Until Ian sent this picture in, I didn’t even know it existed.
DID YOU KNOW? There are three major lava fields that cover an area of 2,893 square kilometers. The area was formed by volcanic eruptions that started 15,000 years ago. The most recent eruption was 2,100 years ago. The eruptions here are called “fissure eruptions”, and they happened along cracks in the earth’s crust. Here is a great website of the park: http://www.nps.gov/crmo/index.htm.
