Escape "to" Alcatraz
Nanette was in southern California and as she looked out onto the San Fransisco Bay – snapped a photo from Alcatraz: “Gardens of Alcatraz. Although well known for its jail, Alcatraz is also home to beautiful gardens. Many were planted and tended by the inmates & staff. The flora and fauna is also a refuge to many types of birds“. The gardens that Nanette saw, fell into neglect after the prison closed in 1963, but thanks to the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy – they are thriving again. In fact, when the volunteers were clearing the overgrowth, they found some of the original plants that were growing where they had been planted – some more than 100 years ago.
DID YOU KNOW? “The Rock“ became a Federal Prison in August of 1934 and kept criminals behind its bars for almost 30 years until 1963. Some of the infamous who were sentenced to serve: Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz), George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Alvin “Creepy” Karpis (he served more time at Alcatraz than any other inmate). Alcatraz was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
