Mexico ~ magnifico!

Mexico ~ magnifico!

The lightest of ocean breezes cooled the evening as Karrie watched the setting sun in Mazatlan.  “I’ve had the opportunity to travel quite a bit and I have to admit, Mazatlan has the best sunsets I’ve seen.   At the end of January while friends and family were scraping windshields, we were applying sunscreen in 30 degree temperatures - and loving it!  Our ‘home’ was the 4 Star El Cid Castilla Beach Resort.   It’s the locals who make the difference – we were treated like royalty!”.

DID YOU KNOW?    Mazatlán has a Malecón – a promenade where you can find shops, hotels, nightclubs, street vendors, old buildings, monuments – cliffs and of course the beach.    It is almost 21 kilometres long.    To find out how you can shop and stop for lunch at the street cafe below, click here:     http://www.summerlandtravel.net

Mazatlan is an ARTS town with support for an art school and a music academy. In the evenings and weekends, you will find music in just about every place that serves food or drink. The traditional Mazatlan musicly style (forget what its called) is something found easily down by the beach. Hope you like tubas and accordians and rather German sounding Spanish folk music. There seem to be a large amount of Canadian and Americans living in Mazatlan and they are very open to assisting tourists who are confused about anything…. where stuff is, what a good price on their public transportation is…. where to eat and what events are going on.

If you wish to truly see how Mexicans party, go during Easter weekend. Of course, you better like crowds and lots of kids as Mexican families over populate Mazatlan for this beginning of spring. And the fun doesn’t even start until 10pm.

Stay out of shady neighborhoods and mind your P’s and Q’s and you will be 100% as safe or safer than being down on Whyte avenue on a regular weekend night.

And…. for entertainment, check out places like Pedro’s and Lola’s which often has some English music entertainment, the food is excellent and its right down in the old Historica part of town. The market place downtown is a must but if you have a weak stomach… well, go past the butchers quickly and don’t look at the big clear bags! LOL. The church is an amazing structure too, at townhall centre and across the street from modern shopping department stores.

    Watch the traffic down here.

Mazatlan is like the best of all of Mexico (less the Mayan ruins of the east). And more beaches than you can shake a stick at.
