Fresh Air Photo Friday, November 27th

In November – specifically the 11th, we say the phrase “Lest we Forget”.    I will never forget the sacrifices made by our Canadian Forces.    Lena agrees.    She sends us 2 photos of a Remembrance Day service in Edmonton from 2008.    Lena says  the ceremony at the Legislature Grounds is one that a lot of people may not know about.    The ceremony includes a 21-gun salute.    It stirs in her – loyalty, pride, sadness, and a feeling that she is seeing something meaningful.

Thank you Lena.    Thank you troops.    & an honourable mention ‘thank you’ to Sheri at visitor services at the Legislature.    She tells me the cannons are located at the Royal Canadian Artillery Saluting Base on the south west side of the grounds.    It is dedicated to Canadian gunners and is used for military salutes.

DID YOU KNOW?     Gun salutes (21) are the firing of cannons or arms as a (military or naval) honour.    The custom originates in naval tradition, where a warship would fire its cannons harmlessly out to sea, until all ammunition was spent, to show that it was disarmed, signifying the lack of hostile intent.

WE SALUTE YOU – FUTURE MEMBERS OF OUR FRESH AIR PHOTO NATION.    UPLOAD YOUR PICTURE, AND SEE IT ON BREAKFAST TELEVISION AS WELL AS THIS VERY BLOG!
