Maybe I’ve traveled too much, seen too many things, to let this “backpack foul” slide. I’m not talking to you, my fellow Canadians…

Advantages of Autumn

Advantages of Autumn

Sonja didn’t have to go far at all – to catch autumn in action.    “Up close with the Swedish Aspen leaves a couple of weeks ago in my backyard.   It was a beautiful evening – almost 7 oc’clock – yet it was still bright.   I stayed wide angle on the leaves, but got good and close”.

DID YOU KNOW?    The Swedish Aspen is one of the most narrowly columnar trees in existence.    It can grow to 40 feet tall but only 5 feet wide.    It is native to the forests of Scandinavia but can thrive and survive in colder climates – like ours!    They are incredibly low maintenance and only need the lightest of pruning.    As the days shorten and the nights cool, trees produce less chlorophyll.    Chlorophyl is the strong pigment that makes leaves look green.    So with less chlorophyl we see more of the other colours.

HELP BRING COLOUR TO OUR WORLD.    ONCE YOU CAMERA CAPTURE MOTHER NATURE OR HER CREATURES - UPLOAD THE PHOTO  AND THEN WATCH FOR IT ON BT AND THIS VERY BLOG.

Agricultural Ah-ROAR-ahh

Agricultural Ah-ROAR-ahh

We appreciate Zoltan braving the elements to give us this incredible view.    “This image was taken on a VERY cold Alberta night.   Location was about 60km east of Edmonton.   With the wind chill it was past -30C!  I didn’t get many shots that night”.     The solar winds were really bombing the Earth’s atmosphere that night!    Keep reading for Northen Lights 101.    And click here for more of Zoltan’s photography    www.infocusimagery.com

DID YOU KNOW?    Solar winds drive charged particles (ions) towards the Earth at about a million miles an hour.    Incredibly, 40 hours later – they finally hit our atmosphere.    And when they do, we are treated to spectacular~dancing Northern Lights.    Our magnetic field draws those particles toward the magnetic poles – that’s why they are brighter in the north and south poles.

WE’RE NOT SENDING YOU OUT IN THE COLD (UNLESS YOU WANT TO), BUT ONCE YOU ARE OUT THERE YOU MIGHT AS WELL TAKE A COUPLE OF PHOTOS.    TRUST ME – YOU’LL BE WARM AND FUZZY ONCE THE COMPLIMENTS START ROLLING IN WHEN YOUR PIC AIRS ON BT AND THIS BLOG.    UPLOAD YOUR PICTURE TODAY!

Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay Lohan at the height of her career in 2004.

Remember when Lindsay Lohan had a successful movie career, was putting out singles, and was arguably Hollywood’s hottest redhead? I barely do either. Go back in time by clicking here.

Preserved for Posterity

Preserved for Posterity

Malcolm and friends at the Birch Bay Ranch have helped to keep this little piece of history – alive.    “We moved this old cabin from one part of our property to where it stands now.   We don’t know very much about it except that it seems to have a lot of years stamped on the end of the logs from 1901 to 1915.     It is called Wooden Pan because when we were fixing it up we found a board that had some twigs spelling Wooden Pan.   During the summer we use it as a souvenir and candy store for the kids and parents“.

DID YOU KNOW?    Birch Bay Ranch is located 45 minutes southeast of Edmonton, on the shore of South Cooking Lakehttp://www.birchbayranch.com.    The lake’s name is a translation of the Cree:  opi-mi-now-wa-sioo, which means “a cooking place“.     The lake was a favourite Cree campground.    Waterfowl love the lake too!    It is a significant place for breeding, moulting, and staging for migration.

DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF “YOUR” FAVORITE PLACE?    UPLOAD YOUR PHOTO TODAY – SEE IT ON BT TOMORROW!

Against the wind

Against the wind

If those walls could talk.    Gayle lives in Lethbridge and seeing this original barn cheered her up on her frequent drives to Calgary.    ”This is on Highway 24 between Mossleigh and Carsland.   I know I drove by it hundreds of times.   One afternoon I stopped to take a picture and am I ever glad I did.   A few months ago, this old dear completely collapsed.”

DID YOU KNOW?    Between 1901 and 1905, 40,000 homesteads were granted in Alberta.    Homesteaders were given freehold title to their land under these conditions:  They pay $10, they agree to stay at least three years, cultivate a certain amount of land each year and build a house.
