No Garden-Variety Beauty!

No Garden-Variety Beauty!

Beauty and tranquility – this is Nancy’s “Happy Place”, her screensaver in fact.    Five years ago, the space was a pile of dirt.    They consulted a professional designer and over the years they have tweaked this and that – figuring out what works and what they like.    “I just love the colour and variety of our garden.    I find weeding therapeutic – a great place to take out my daily frustrations as I yank and toss.    Since I am chomping at the bit to get back into the garden, I guess gardening really has become my passion.    I can’t say I’ve learned to ‘live with’ what the weather does to the garden, but I have less issue with the weather than I do with the rabbits!    They think I’m growing a giant buffet!

DID YOU KNOW?    Natural beauty makes us instantly feel better & stimulates inspiring thoughts.    Here’s what an environmental medicine researcher has to say:  Dr. Howard Frumkin reports that hospital patients who had a view of nature from their hospital room were discharged earlier and required fewer pain medications than patients whose windows faced bricked walls.    Prisoners who interacted with nature – experienced higher rehabilitation rates.

SO THAT MEANS BECOMING A FRESH AIR PHOTOGRAPHER IS GOOD FOR YOU!    & IT AIN’T SO BAD FOR US EITHER!    ON OUR MAIN WEBPAGE FIND “CONNECT WITH BT”, UPLOAD YOUR PHOTO AND THEN WATCH FOR IT ON BT AND THIS VERY BLOG!

Sunrise Specialty

Sunrise Specialty

Not a bad way to start the day – and thank you to Doris for sharing!    Even during those short and shivering January days, mornings offered us hope.    Doris lives on a farm south of Elk Point and was getting her son ready for school at about 8:10am.   “The weather was nice – the sunrise caught my eye so I had to be quick to grab the camera because it didn’t stay very long .. maybe 3 minutes at the most”.    I wonder if that’s where the saying “you snooze you lose” comes from?

DID YOU KNOW?    The town of Elk Point is on the southeast branch of Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail.    The trail follows the abandoned CN rail line for 300 km.    You can walk, bike, hike, hop on a horse or ATV.    You’ll see a wide variety of ecological settings that have remained relatively untouched since the early 1990’s.    It’s an Alberta experience that should not be missed:  http://www.ironhorsetrail.ca/points.html

ANDY WARHOL SAID:  “IN THE FUTURE, EVERYONE WILL BE FAMOUS FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES”.    NO DISRESPECT ANDY – BUT ON THIS BLOG – PHOTOGRAPHERS WILL BE FAMOUS FOR M-U-C-H LONGER THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES.    CALLING ALL PHOTOGS, UPLOAD YOUR  FAME-BUILDING PHOTO TODAY!

ISLAMUJERES

We’ve all been there. Co-worker set to leave for an exotic getaway, everybody else feigning excitement over the pending departure.
“Have so much fun. You’re going to love it there!”
“This is soooooooo well deserved. You’ve earned it.”
“Make sure you’ve got sand in your toes and a drink in your hand at all times!”
Of course, everyone’s mumbling and grumbling is just barely stifled by forced smiles and “See you when you get back.” Nobody’s actually happy for the one who got away (nor should they be).  Let’s face it – it sucks to be the one staying home in early spring. More work and no margaritas. Blech.
That’s why I kept my mouth shut (for the most part) leading up to our trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The last thing I need is our entire talented BT team hating my guts before I’ve even got the tan to really make ‘em jealous. Nobody actually wants to hear about the piercing blue water, the world-class SCUBA diving or the positively perfect temperatures. Not a single soul is interested in my plan to do nothing but relax in a tropical paradise for seven straight days.
So I slipped out in silence. I’ll be back in a week. And I’ll keep my stories to myself…unless you ask.
Hasta luego!

The Residents cause crowd to evacuate concert!

Not because of their music no no no! Unfortunately it was likely due to the smoke machine…

The Residents stopped in Edmonton for the first time in their lengthy and prolific careers. Last night at the Myer Horowitz Theater at the U of A Edmonton had a dorky little fantasy take form. Although they did not sport the trademark eyeball helmets they brought us “the talking light” and a few other songs. The highlight for most of the crowd was when a stage tech came out to tell the band that the flashing lights and alarm like sounds were not part of the show. They indeed meant we had to promptly leave the theater. Since it was the encore I think most fans were not too disappointed, having a great story to tell of the concert. However I think we are all curious as to what would have happened had the show continued un-interupted.

here is a stinky phone photo, sorry but my camera recently took a spill walking on an Icy Edmonton sidewalk:(

There is also a video of the end of the concert, but you cant hear the bad news but you sure can here the alarm.

Passage to India

Passage to India

Dining in or out this evening, sir?    Suman is behind the lens with this fantastic action shot!    She was in India last May“I noticed it because the house had an amazing garden.   We were looking at the flowers and I was taking some random pictures when I happened upon the lizard - lunching.   And was it hot!   At least 35, and as humid as a sauna!

DID YOU KNOW?    Lizards lunch on insects, small rodents and even other lizards.    They have teeth, but mainly use them to grip their prey – not tear it up.    And as we can see in the picture above, prey is swallowed whole, after it is stunned by shaking.    Sometimes, young inexperienced Lizards can try to swallow prey which is too large, and end up choking.    (Guess mom “was” right when she scolded us:  “Chew your food!”).

DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF ONE OF YOUR TRIPS?    BE IT A DAY-TRIP OR A TRIP OF A LIFETIME, WE WANT TO SEE WHAT YOU SAW.    UPLOAD YOUR  PHOTO TODAY!

Bright Blue Bird!
NOW it feels like Spring!

Absolute perfection.    We are thankful to Murray for a number of reasons:  For holding steady in his camera-capture of the Mountain Bluebird, and for building the nestbox!    You may be wondering why no round hole for the bird’s front door, Murray explains:  ”There are definite benefits to the design.   The main one is that if a person does not have a round hole cutter, they can carefully cut the square 1-and-a-half inch hole out of the corner of the nest box door and get bluebirds and not starlings.   The door closed MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 1-and-a-half  inches”.

DID YOU KNOW?    Mountain Bluebirds’ favorite dinner is insects and spiders which they get from short grasses.    Besides raising a family in nest boxes, they’ll use holes in trees and even cavities in eroded soil on river banks.

WHATEVER THE SEASON – NO MATTER THE REASON – WE WANT TO SEE YOUR PHOTO.    UPLOAD IT TODAY!
