Principe on Quinn, Taylor/Tyler and Hemmer

NHL Oilers Quinn 20090526

The Edmonton Oilers are reinventing themselves in an “Extreme Makeover” kind of way. On the outs: head coach Pat Quinn (the jury’s still out on assistants Kelly Buchberger and Wayne Fleming), Springfield Falcons head coach Rob Daum, the entire Oilers long-time training staff (including Kevin Lowe’s brother Ken) and legendary broadcaster Rod Phillips. Depending on who you believe, captain Ethan Moreau, oft-injured blueliner Sheldon Souray and the packed-with-promise Ales Hemsky could be packing their bags before training camp as well.

These moves are part of the “restructuring” many NHL teams go through after finishing dead last. While fans anticipate the rookie debuts of  Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, pundits like Sportsnet’s Gene Principe are doing their best to predict the club’s next move.

We asked “Gino” to weigh in on Quinn’s move upstairs as “senior advisor,” the whole Taylor/Tyler debate and Hemsky’s future in Edmonton leading up to Friday’s NHL Entry Draft. Check out our interview with Gene below.

All’s Well That Inks Well

ali

You can’t say he didn’t give it his all.

Kasey from California pledged to guard and protect Ali’s heart. He even inked his vow onto his wrist (”Y’see the eleven studs? That’s because there are eleven studs here.” And they say chivalry is dead). But Kasey’s over-the-top commitment wasn’t enough to get him past Monday night’s episode of The Bachelorette on Citytv.

A serendipitous double date match-up with Kasey gave Rated R…errrrr, Justin from Toronto at least another week’s worth of exposure. On Tuesday morning’s BT Bachelorette panel, Trevor, Meredith and Aubrey seemed to agree this next rose ceremony might be The Wrestler’s last. Especially if you believe the rumours about somebody having a girlfriend…(SPOILER ALERT!).

Stay b-a-a-a-ck

Stay b-a-a-a-ck

You are out for a ride, you turn the corner, and sitting there waiting in a regal pose - mountain sheep.    That’s exactly what happened to Lee, family & friends.    ”We went for a mountain bike ride a few weeks ago near Nordegg, and they didn’t even bother to get up when we pulled over to take their picture!!”    Just be careful not to get too close.    Those horns are tough and sharp – not to mention their hooves that are pretty much made of stilts.

DID YOU KNOW?      A sheep never sheds its horns, but they ‘do’ shed their hair.    In June or July sheep shed their hair.    Until the new coat grows in, they have a scruffy appearance with patches of matted old hair.

A FRESH AIR PHOTO COULD BE WAITING FOR YOU AROUND THE CORNER.    SNAP AND SEND — AND WATCH FOR YOUR PICTURE ON BT.

Watch the video and if you want to know more go to  www.dudeperfect.com.

6 college buddies from the states have gone viral with a swish of a basketball.

Story goes:  they are from TEXAS  A & M  University and are the champions of trick basketball shots.

They got their name one day when one of the guys was framing his buddy in the camera.  The one guy asks ”how’s this”?  ”Dude, perfect” was the answer.

They have been making the tv show circuit in the states and were recently on Good Morning America.  GMA called in computer experts…and they could not find the fakery or edits.  Can you?

Reflecting at Cold Lake

Reflecting at Cold Lake

Cold Lake is one of Alberta’s largest and deepest lakes.    And as Donna shows us, it is also one of the most beautiful.    She is a real estate agent, so I’m pretty sure this sight would seal any deal.    ”It was an absolutely breathless day!    This lake is so clean you can drink the water!   We are a thriving oil-related city as well.  A fabulous place to live and raise a family!”    Well said Donna – thanks!

DID YOU KNOW?    Cold Lake is the home of Canadian Air Forces Base 4 Wing.   Here’s a quick history lesson:  The year was 1952 – and it was the height of the Cold War.    The Royal Canadian Air Force was looking for a spot to build the country’s premier air weapons training base.    Cold Lake was chosen because of low population, accessibility, weather, suitable terrain, and available land for air weapons training.    Personnel arrived at Cold Lake on March 31, 1954 — the very next day RCAF Station Cold Lake was up and running.

THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW OFF YOUR HOME CITY TOWN OR VILLAGE — WITH MOTHER NATURE OR HER CREATURES IN THE SUPPORTING CAST.    UPLOAD YOUR PICTURE TODAY, SEE IT ON BT TOMORROW (WITH A PIT STOP ON THIS BLOG).

On Pelican Pond

On Pelican Pond

Talk about timing!    Candice even captured the splashing — and look how one of those beautiful Pelicans is mid-air.    Candice says one warm Saturday evening they were sitting on the back deck and her 3 year old exclaimed:  “Mommy look at the ducks!”.    Cute.    “Once my little guy was in bed, I walked across the street with my camera and just started shooting.    I think I took about 40 pics – and this one was my favorite lol!”.

DID YOU KNOW?    Pelicans are the largest “fishing bird” with a wing span up to 3 metres.    The White Pelican does not dive from the air, but swims along and scoops up mouthfuls of fish in its expandable pouch.    Parents regurgitate the fish for their young, who feed from their mom and dad’s pouches.

SOMETIMES FRESH AIR PHOTOS ARE RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET.    IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW MANY YOU TAKE,…WE ONLY NEED ONE PICTURE TO ROCKET YOU TO FRESH AIR PHOTO FAME.    UPLOAD YOURS TODAY!

Storm brewin'

Storm brewin'

There are so many colours in this picture – and so much going on!    You can see the rain in the distance, the perfect reflection on the water, the green green grass, and a happy family who stopped to enjoy the view.    This is just north of Westlock.    How do I know?    rj told me so:  ” we were just heading out on our vacation, and I caught a glimpse of this in my rearview mirror, so I just had to pull over and snap a pic!  It’s one of my favorites in my collection!”

DID YOU KNOW?    The way that the clouds are sweeping to the ground means rain, but I also see virga in that picture.    Virga is rain that evaporates before it hits the ground.

SEND US ”YOUR” VACATION PICTURES IF YOU LIKE — AS LONG AS MA NATURE IS IN THERE SOMEWHERE.    FRESH AIR PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE PAID HANDSOMELY — PAID COMPLIMENT AFTER COMPLIMENT THAT IS.    UPLOAD “YOUR” PHOTO TODAY!

Where there's smoke ...

Where there's smoke ...

It was a dry-dry dangerous spring.    At the beginning of April almost 200 fires were burning in the province … four times higher than the average.    Tobi and family were enjoying a warm day on the pier at Lake Wabamun and offers this snap shot of history.    We go there quite often - our one year old daughter loves the water and the birds.    The smoke wasn’t too bad that day.    The wind was blowing the other way but there were moments that we did have to close the house windows because the smoke was so bad.    Like everyone, we are so glad the fires are now out!!“    Well said — and photographed Tobi.

DID YOU KNOW?    There is an expected wildfire season in our province, it officially begins April 1st.

HERE ARE SOME STATS from the 2009 wildfire season:
There were more than 1,600 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area – more than HALF caused by human activity.
Those wildfires burned nearly 67,000 hectares of land – an area about the size of the City of Edmonton.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT O’ FRESH AIR PHOTOGRAPHER IS TO MAKE TELEVISION HISTORY.    ANY SHOT OF MOTHER NATURE OR HER CREATURES WILL AIR ON BT AND BE SHOWCASED ON THIS VERY BLOG.

If you ask me, the fact that an “entertainment wrestler” isn’t even close to the craziest man in a house full of suitors is enough reason to tune into The Bachelorette Monday nights at 9pm on Citytv.

We asked our BT Bachelorette Panel to dish on Roberto’s rise on Broadway, Kasey’s new ink and the unfortunate singer/songwriter trend that seems to be defining Ali Fedotowsky’s quest for love. As is the case every Tuesday morning at 8:10, Meredith, Aubrey and Trevor didn’t disappoint. Check out the video below for more…
