Tundra Swans

Tundra Swans

If only those swans could talk.    Wait-a-sec, one of them can – kind of!    The Tundra Swan bent-over is banded, which is proof of the number of air miles she has racked up.    Murray-a licensed bander of birds- took this picture April 1st.    He discovered that the bird was banded in July of 2009, 200 miles north west of Kodiak, Alaska.    Since then, she has been seen in Oregon.    Murray thinks from there she has in California, and now back to Alberta.    So the adventure continues for:  Tundra Swan – Banded on the Run(NOT to be confused with Paul McCartney’s Band on the Run).

DID YOU KNOW?    Tundra Swans – at one time – were called Whistling Swans.    Their ‘voice’,…is not as loud as other types of swans, in fact the call of the Tundra Swan is soft and melodious.

IT COULD BE YOUR SWAN SONG — YOUR DEBUT ON BREAKFAST TELEVISION.    UPLOAD YOUR PICTURE TODAY … SEE IT ON BT TOMORROW!

Solar storm

Solar storm

Lucky for us Zoltan Kenwell is willing to go to the ends of the Earth to show “us” the ends of the Earth.    The Northern Lights are a painting in the sky… but instead of oil-based paints we are looking at the magic of lights! (actually it’s gases in our atmosphere interacting with solar winds).    Zoltan shot “this” and many more amazing photos last Sunday and Monday – just west of Edmonton.    Check out Zoltan’s website  www.infocusimagery.com.

DID YOU KNOW?    If you would like to receive alerts about the next magnetic storm, register with these folks at the University of Alberta:   www.aurorawatch.ca.

So I stayed up late last night and I am not feeling the effects too badly today. This is most likely due to the fact that I am still pretty stoked on the Hair Police show I witnessed last night at Black Dog. Check it out, I made a video of the last song to share with all who could not attend. Although how many actually enjoyed it let alone as much as I did remains uncertain. When asked how I was doing (after the performance) by Whitney, I described myself as doing great because I really enjoyed the set. She replied I think you may be the only one here. Although this is not entirely true because there was quite a gathering of show goers at the foot of the small stage. Noise music is hard for many to embrace, for the music is abrasive. I find that it is quite interesting because it turns “noise” into “music”. I  have grown a bit tired of “normal” “music” and I am in a constant search for something “different”. Anyways,  you can see for your self, tell me what you think.

Maybe it is one of those you had to be there things?

Also,

For Suman, a video that I have been thinking about because all of the Volcanic action going on in Iceland.

Honey - where's the shovel?

Honey - where's the shovel?

There sure is a lot of snow in this shot — Get my drift?    Drift (!).. oh my aching sides!!    Natalie and little Brielle show us the calm after the storm at her parents’ house, just outside of Bonnyville.    Natalie writes: “keep in mind that this snow came in one snowfall – there was no snow before!”    On the far left of the shot you can see how the wind has whipped the slab of snow and smoothed out the surface.    Forget my aching sides, oh my aching back!

DID YOU KNOW?    In the city of Edmonton – the history books are covered in snow for April.    On April 13th, 1973 – 22.6cm of snow fell.    The biggest April snowfall ever was April 23rd 1990 – 43.4cm(17 inches) buried the city.

Cure for the Common Cold?

coldVIRUS

It’s been a miserable few days for this dude. A nasty cough, persistent sniffles, cold sweats and burning eyelids. It’s been about a month since I started feeling lousy but this week’s been the worst yet. I’ve tried name brand cold medications. I’ve tried Edmonton’s home-grown favourite (for the record, I’m a non-believer). I’ve even downed an ENTIRE bottle of Buckley’s (they’re right about at least one half of the slogan – it does taste awful).

After all the “conventional” measures, my cold is still here. That’s why we spent a good portion of Wednesday’s show asking for and reading out your family secrets. Michele McDougall even joined me as we put a few of the (non-alcoholic) concoctions to the test.

Sniffling or not, I’ll see you in the morning!

Frozen rain pane pain

Frozen rain pain on the pane

Brian wonders about spring when he looks out his window.    The calendar confirms it, but just as long as we all realize that the month of April is when we receive most of our precipitation.    Too bad that it doesn’t come in the form of a nice steady rain — not the frozen drops that turn your stride into a shuffle.    Will you admit that the ICE ART (as Brian points out) is some of Jack Frost’s best?

DID YOU KNOW?    Freezing rain happens when rain (from a warm air mass) falls through a cold air mass.    The cold air mass must be shallow so that the rain doesn’t have time to freeze before it reaches the ground.    Unfortunately, the rain freezes ON IMPACT and that makes for treacherous driving conditions and creates ice on tree limbs, branches, and power lines -sometimes making them snap.

Take er easy Tuesday

posted on April 13th, 2010 - Filed in Uncategorized - No comments »

Here is a nice chilled out sound for a lackluster(weather-wise) Tuesday. I have to say that the only highlight so far for me is seeing a tanker truck full of milk tipped over gushing milk into the thirsty streets. No one cried. Anyways… I was just turned on to this fantastic video artist Jamie Harley. Nice morphing videos, its all quite pretty. Here is the video that Jamie created for “How to Dress Well – Decisions”

HOW TO DRESS WELL – “Decisions” (feat. Yüksel Arslan) from Jamie Harley on Vimeo.

So nice and colourful!

if you wanna take a little preview listen to LCD Soundsystem’s  ”Oh You”

Tasty.

Makes me even more excited for the new album coming out!
