Bright lights big city

Bright lights big city

We take you to the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River.    If you have seen the boat The Edmonton Queen  this is down the shore a little further to the east.    I like how Shane frames his shot with the branches and patches of ice on the left.    The ice reflections …. totally cool!    And the rain clouds— gorgeous.

DID YOU KNOW?    Many cities look their best after dark.    One of the tricks is to get much more light into your camera for a decent-looking image.    Experts say to choose the smallest f-number available and a relatively long shutter speed to capture the lights.    One second is a good starting point and most cameras indicate seconds using double quotes, so look for 1”.    AND, Keep your camera steady with a tripod.    Use the self-timer to avoid wobbling the camera as you press the button.

DAY OR NIGHT, WEEK’END’ OR WEEK DAY - PHOTOGRAPH MOTHER NATURE OR HER CREATURES AND THIS SPOT IS YOURS.    WELL, NOT EXACTLY ‘THIS SPOT’,….BUT YOU WILL GET YOUR VERY OWN BLOG PAGE - AND YOUR VERY OWN INTRODUCTION ON BT.    UPLOAD YOUR PHOTO TODAY!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Although I was not with Don and his wife on this lovely evening, I imagine the sun was making a last ditch effort to make an appearance.    It also looks like there was humidity in the air with such a creative collection of clouds.    On the right, there are 2 lines of cloud with a flat bottom – that’s where the rising air stabilized(stopped rising).    On the top left is a mass of blue – looks like it was trying its best to rain … and almost smack dab in the middle of the picture the sun is illuminating VIRGA.    -Virga is rain that dries up before it reaches the ground.    Those in Sherwood Park do indeed have the view to their advantage.

DID YOU KNOW?    Driving into a rising or setting sun can be dangerous.    To fight glare of all kinds, wear sunglasses made with polarized lenses.    Ordinary lenses are not designed to cut through glare.    And try to avoid vinyl cleaners that give your dash a high-gloss finish.    It may look great, but your dash becomes a mirror in that bright blinding sun!

TAKE CARE OUT THERE OH-FRESH AIR PHOTOGRAPHER.    SNAP SAFELY AND THEN SEND AWAY.    WE ARE WAITING FOR YOUR PICTURE OF MOTHER NATURE OR HER CREATURES…..RIGHT NOW!

posted on April 21st, 2010 - Filed in Uncategorized - No comments »

You have probably heard of a scavenger hunt.    But this, well “THIS”, is THE ULTIMATE SCAVENGER HUNT and it has completely captivated the students at Archbishop Jordan High School in Sherwood Park.    Below are members of the team: “Joly’s Heroes”.    I was one of the the “items” they needed to collect.

Joly's Heroes

Let’s meet them!    In the back row from left to right -Nicole is in yellow, then:  Tess, Justine D, Melissa, Justine M, and Kaitlyn.    In the front:  Karen, Stephen, Jonhansel, and Laryssa.

Treasure hunters!

Treasure hunters!

This year, there are 17 teams with 10 students per team.    They must search, scour, beg, and sometimes even buy about 100 items ranging from:  getting a zamboni to drive by the school, finding a 9-month pregnant woman, a Spanish Bible, an extracted wisdom tooth, a Wonder Woman comic book, and having a BT host come to the school!    That’s where I was honoured to come in.    Good luck and congratulations to all!!

Elk siesta

Elk Siesta

This picture is proof that Fresh Air Photos can sneak up on you .. or in this case you sneak up on them.    Chris writes:  “on our way back from BC we stopped at Banff.    Early the next morning we took a walk around the golf course(near Banff  Springs Hotel) and spotted this elk.    He seemed to be content to let us sto and take his picture”.

DID YOU KNOW?    You are almost guaranteed to see elk in  Banff National Park.    Back in the early 19-hundreds, one thousand elk were brought in from Yellowstone National Park.    They are very important to the local ecology,…that’s because  they are the main plant eater in the park, and in turn are a major food source for predators such as wolves.

YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO ‘OUR’ ECOLOGY … OUR FRESH AIR PHOTO CIRCLE OF LIFE.    UPLOAD YOUR PHOTO TODAY — SEE IT ON BT TOMORROW!

Lac La Nonne

Lac La Nonne

Ahh the summer days that are on the horizon!    Roxanne shares her happy place with us at Kildeer Beach Resort.    Welcome to Lac La Nonne south of Barrhead.    While you camp at Killdeer Beach Resort and/or Elksbeach Campground – you can throw your line in.    There are some mighty fine and tasty walleye and northern pike to be had.

DID YOU KNOW?    The name of the lake means “the nun” in French,…but how the name came to be is a bit of a mystery.    Wayyy back in 1827, a man named Edward Ermatinger recorded the lake’s name in his journal as Lac La Nane.    It has been suggested that the name comes from the White-winged Scoter, a duck with features similar to ducks in England known as “the nun”.

SHARE YOUR HAPPY PLACE WITH US .. BE IT A LAKE OR LAND.    WHEN YOU JOIN OUR FRESH AIR PHOTO NATION YOU WILL DISCOVER THE BENEFITS ARE ENDLESS.    WE PROVIDE YOUWITH A SPOT ON THIS VERY BLOG AND YOUR TELEVISION DEBUT.    UPLOAD YOUR PIC TODAY!
