An absolutely perfect shot with the vibrant petals, the huge stigma, and the bright background.    Courtney shows great skill and nerve – getting nice and close to the sting-ed one.      The sticky bulb in the centre of this flower is called the stigma.

Time for a drink?

Time for a drink?

DID YOU KNOW?     Stigmas have a sticky top so the pollen will stick to it and pollinate the plant.    Without pollination, there would be no seeds.

WITHOUT YOU THERE WOULD BE NO FRESH AIR PHOTO SEGMENT.    THEN WHAT ELSE WOULD WE SHOW AT  7:10 EVERY MORNING?    UPLOAD YOUR PHOTO TODAY … SEE IT ON BT TOMORROW!

avalanche

Anybody who’s lost a friend in the backcountry (myself included) knows all too well how quickly an adrenaline-fueled adventure can turn tragic. All too often, we see stories in the news of accidents that may have been preventable.

Lori Zacaruk, an avalanche awareness expert from Zacstracs, swung by BT to bring us up to speed on what’s new (and leading-edge) in safety gear. Check out the video link below for some incredible footage of an avalanche (and subsequent rescue), captured from a skiers’ helmet cam.

As you’ll see, I got pretty “pumped up” about Lori’s backpack.

Ride safe!

Dusting the Crabapples

Dusting the Crabapples

The first dusting of snow always looks so pretty, proof is in the pudding – Crabapple pudding perhaps?    Kingsley in Lethbridge tells us this was their first dusting in October.    Whenever I see a crabapple tree it brings back great memories of when I was growing up.    My mom made delicious jelly and tasty wine from our tree.    We ate crabapples until our tummies ached, and then embarked on harmless raiding of the  neighbours’ crab trees – careful not to eat any spiders or worms.

DID YOU KNOW?    Crabapples belong to the same genus as edible apples.    One of the reasons there are so many varieties is because crabapples freely pollinate with each other – resulting in numerous hybrids.

HOP IN YOUR HYBRID … OR HOP ON YOUR BICYCLE – BUT DON’T FORGET YOUR CAMERA.    UPLOAD YOUR FRESH AIR PHOTO AND BECOME A MEMBER OF OUR FRESH AIR PHOTO NATION.
