Snow blanket beauty

Snow blanket beauty

During the Christmas holidays, Melsha and family were out for a drive - south of the city of Edmonton.    Check out the blue blue sky that brings out the heavy snow on the boughs of the fir and spruce trees.    That could be a Christmas card in the making … all the elements are there, and all the elements are undisturbed.

DID YOU KNOW?   One of the biggest snowfalls in Edmonton happened in April of 1990.    That day, we had 43.4centimeters, that’s almost 17 inches.

Ever Seen A Pocket Pig?

Meet Sapphire (right), a teacup chihuahua that spends weekends with us from time to time. She makes her best friend Cheeka, pictured on the left, look like a giant! Sapphire checks in just under two pounds, stands just a bit taller than a coffee mug, and reduces anybody she meets to mush.

Then there’s “pocket pigs” like the one featured in the video below. Pretty much the coolest, bravest four-legged friend I’ve seen in a long time. Just TRY not to smile as you watch!

(A word of caution: you may never eat bacon again.)

Have a great weekend!

An upside down 2

An upside down 2

Tradition!    You can’t deny tradition is a h-u-g-e part of hockey in Canada, not to mention Edmonton.    The banner above is a perfect example.    Can you tell that the 5 in the ‘85′ is an upside down 2?    When the banner was originally made, the manufacturer was out of 5’s … No problem -  Improvise!    Over time, those championship banners suffer the wear and tear — so they need to be replaced.    And since the original was made with an upside down 2, so was the replacement – TRADITION.    I learned this great story from Jessica McPhee – Manager, Corporate Communications – who took a group of us on a catwalk tour before the Oilers game the other night.

Below are:  Aaron Hawke, Jessica McPhee, Leanne Laverick, Moi, Richard Zussman.    If Zussman looks familiar he should – he is one of our Breakfast Television news reporters.

Tour de force!

Tour de force!

Another highlight of the tour was meeting the VOICE at Rexall.    Mark Lewis is the man you hear everytime the Oilers(& those other guys) score or take a penalty.

The moon? Kind of!

The moon? Kind of!

When you hear the word wonderland .. the picture above might not come to mind — but what you are looking at IS a volcanic wonderland in Idaho.    Welcome to  Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.    Ian’s perspective is from 1 thousand feet above ground.    Until Ian sent this picture in, I didn’t even know it existed.

DID YOU KNOW?    There are three major lava fields that cover an area of  2,893 square kilometers.    The area was formed by volcanic eruptions that started 15,000 years ago.    The most recent eruption was 2,100 years ago.    The eruptions here are called “fissure eruptions”, and they happened along cracks in the earth’s crust.     Here is a great website of the park:     http://www.nps.gov/crmo/index.htm.

Newfoundland

Newfoundland

Kelly writes about their September trip to Signal Hill, NL:  “We had just landed, picked up our rental car, and headed straight to this spot for the spectacular – and surprisingly clear – view.    We were very lucky to enjoy good weather throughout our stay on the island.”    And we are lucky  to be seeing what Kelly saw - thank you!    Signal Hill overlooks the city of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

DID YOU KNOW?    Signal Hill has stood the test of time.    For more than 400 years, imagine how many people have looked up to it.    Because of its perfect placement overlooking the harbour, the spot has been used as a lookout by ships & their signalmen and used by the military.

jakepilot

A New York City girl goes all “outdoorsy,” the gaggle is starting to turn on the black swan, and our last (not so great) Canadian hope goes home as Jake the Pilot cleans house (tossing roses in the fire along the way)! Just when you thought The Bachelor couldn’t bring any more drama to Monday nights on Citytv, BAM!

As per usual, our BT Bachelor panel came together Tuesday morning at 7:40 to dissect all the new developments. Despite their heated hotstove, Trevor, Dajana, Ramya and Jesse all agreed on one thing - next Monday’s episode is Must See TV!
