BT Gives Thanks!

posted on October 9th, 2009 - Filed in Uncategorized - No comments »

What a year to renew our perspective and give thanks. Stories of economic collapse, devastating acts of nature and continued fighting overseas have the potential to cast a dark cloud over the Thanksgiving holiday, but it’s times like these where it’s most important to realize our blessings. This year, I’m especially thankful for my best friend (and new wife!) Kari, my amazing family and a great circle of teammates here at Breakfast Television. Okay, okay…I’m also thankful for another season of NHL hockey, the promise of snow in the mountains, and an extended break from my golf game (that appeared to be heading south for the winter three months ahead of time).

My decision of what to make for our BT Thanksgiving feast was an easy one – the famous Jespersen broccoli casserole has been an integral part of family feasts for at least three generations. It’s one of the staples featured in our family cookbook “Udderly Delicious” (scroll down to see my great-grandma Anna Jespersen gracing the cover from her kitchen at the family homestead in Stony Plain circa 1958). I can only hope I don’t disgrace the dish, making it live on BT Friday morning.

If you’d like to try it at home, you’ll need enough broccoli to fill an 8×8″ pan, a cup of bread crumbs, butter (to grease the pan and brown the bread crumbs), one tin of mushroom soup, one cup of sour cream and one cup of grated cheese.

Cook the broccoli slightly. Place in the greased 8×8″ pan. Mix one tin mushroom soup with one cup sour cream. Place over top of broccoli. Put one cup grated cheese over top. Top this with one cup buttered, browned crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. ENJOY…and Happy Thanksgiving!

Frozen fauna

Frozen fauna

Here’s the story:  Last week, Terilyn went to fetch the morning newspaper and she heard a hissing sound when she opened the front door.   Her hubby had been watering the front yard the night before and forgot to turn off the water.   Terilyn says the pictures don’t do the scene justice — says they laughed about the “crystalized creation” — but I think the shots are great.   There is beauty in the errors of our ways ~~ If you look hard enough!!!

IF “YOU” LOOK HARD ENOUGH I AM SURE YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING WORTHY OF OUR FRESH AIR PHOTO SEGMENT.   WE OF THE FRESH AIR PHOTO NATION ARE WAITING FOR YOU!!! … AND YOUR PHOTO.

Treasure Hunting on BT!

posted on October 7th, 2009 - Filed in Uncategorized - No comments »

Everybody’s got them – knick knacks, treasures, collectables. Whatever you call them, chances are you’ve got a collection somewhere in your home (and they’re called “hockey figurines” babe…not “dolls”). Your stockpile may be priceless to you…but what’s it really worth on the open market?

We’ve all heard stories of “the man who bought a tacky painting for $5 at a garage sale and sold it for $15 million at an art auction” or “the woman who cleaned out her attic and threw out her son’s hockey card collection worth thousands!” Deep down inside, I think each of us wants to believe we’re sitting on something special. Call it our unofficial “rainy day fund.”

I’m a sucker for those TV shows that allow ordinary people to bring in their antiques for appraisal. One of my favourite TV commercials is a spoof of that type of program. We were excited to welcome two appraisers from the “British Artiques Roadshow” to BT for an in-studio session, including a closer look at a few of our personal treasures.  Two Jack Lake

Thank you Cheryl.    Thank you Mother Nature.    Not a breath of wind, an azure blue sky–and the only sound is of the paddle gently dipping in the water.    Two Jack Lake is in Banff National Park – about 12km from the townsite.    The  mighty Cascade Mountain climbs a mile into the sky from the highway.

DID YOU KNOW?   Banff was settled in the 1880’s – the railway opening up the area for tourism.   Banff was named after Banffshire, Scotland – the birthplace of one of the directors of the CPR.

DISCOVER YOUR INNER TALENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND BECOME A MEMBER OF OUR FRESH AIR PHOTO NATION.    UPLOAD YOUR PIC AND WATCH FOR IT ON BT … as well as this humble blog.

Rockin Robin

Rockin Robin

A robin “holding court”!    He’s a big fat healthy one, perhaps singing a happy tune as well.    Don calls it a “Stately Robin”.    This photo, in Sherwood Park, was taken in the 10 power – Don was about 25 feet away.    He tells us, the robins have been around the dogwood thicket for awhile, and some are fattening up on white berries.   Robins are the birds that signal the arrival of spring.    But by November – most have taken flight for warmer climes down south.

DID YOU KNOW?    The robin is one of the first birds to sing in the morning and is one of the last to be heard at night.    It makes an average of 180 trips a day when it builds its nest.    And favorite food?    The earthworm.    But he also dines on insects and fruit — both wild and domesticated.

IF YOU ARE OUT IN THE WILD — ACT DOMESTICATED AND TAKE A PICTURE OR 2!    YOUR PHOTO(S)  WILL BE FEATURED ON BT AS WELL AS THIS VERY BLOG.    THE COST?    WELL YOU CAN SEND MONEY IF YOU LIKE–BUT REALLY, WE JUST WANT YOUR PHOTO.
