BT Celebrates Archie!

posted on August 20th, 2009 - Filed in Uncategorized - 2 comments »

I remember questioning his judgement from the get-go. How could Archie Andrews overlook Betty Cooper’s obvious “wife-worthy” traits in favour of being pushed around by Veronica Lodge time and time again? I know I wasn’t the only pre-teen who was baffled by Archie’s romantic instincts. Archie comics were the first real regular reading I embraced as a kid, along with millions of other dedicated comic fans around the world. Looking back, I think I gleaned more about dealing with the fairer sex by learning from Archie’s mistakes!

On Wednesday’s BT, Bridget “Veronica” Ryan and I (”Jughead” Jespersen) celebrated the engagement of Archie and Veronica (after 67 years of dating!) by dressing up as our favourite characters. We welcomed Archie collector Marc Desgagne into our studio (the guy owns 10,000 Archie comics!), worked through some tough Archie trivia, and asked you which character you related to most. What a blast from the past, hearing names like Mrs. Grundy, Professor Flutesnoot, Mr. Weatherbee and Dilton Doiley!

Even though our unofficial poll results around the Citytv newsroom show about 95% of Archie fans believe he should be forever-linked to the blonde over the brunette, we decided to let love rule and support the engagement anyway! In fact, I was so influenced by the good vibes surrounding Archie’s proposal I even SHARED the burger platter from our friends at Delux Burger Bar! Now THAT’S unexpected.

Michimichi, Alberta

Michichi, Alberta

Welcome to Michichi, Alberta with serenity to start your day.   The quiet lapping of water on the shore .. the early morning sky painted in pastels.   Only Mother Nature can create such shades of blue, yellow, and pink.   Frank and Paula saw this sunrise for themselves, and are now sharing with us through their camera.   Thanks for that!   Hmm, willing to share the fish you caught as well?

DID YOU KNOW?   Michichi is located just north and east of Drumheller in Starland County.    Hey history buffs:  Back in 1960, Council decided to purchase a C.N.R. reservoir at Michichi.    The deal for 81.46 acres, was for $800.00 cash.    They bought the reservoir to provide farmers with water for their livestock, and somebody had foresight at that time for folks like you, I, Frank & Paula.    The thought was to have the water supply for future development of recreational opportunities for the residents of the municipality.   Cool!   If you want to know more, check out this website of area history.         http://www.starlandcounty.com/history.htm

Wow ~ !   Get a load of this action shot.   Tough to swallow?   I don’t think so – although you ARE looking at a tough little Swallow getting a mouth-full from Papa.   Murray had a front row seat for this little nature lesson.    This nest box is in his yard in sunny Ponoka.

DID YOU KNOW?    Swallows are graceful and agile fliers.   They also LOVE to eat on the fly – meaning:  they eat a lot of flying insects while in the air.   That’s one of the reasons why they spend a lot of time in flight.   It’s common to see their flocks on roadside wires but right about now they are starting to hit the road,…er, uh the sky for warmer climes.   But the good news is – they come back in the early spring to make their nests in tree-holes or nest boxes.

Pigeon Lake

Pigeon Lake

Below the surface are big, fat, healthy Walleye.   If only I knew someone who would take me fishing….     Well, I do know someone, but I missed the boat on Friday night.   On that boat were brothers Jerry and Barry -who were only too willing to show(off),..um, I mean show me what I missed!    The fish were biting my friends-apparently they were going for the jigs and the minnows.   Well that’s the fish story Jerry tells, and in this case … he does have the photographic evidence to back him up.   Maybe ‘this’ weekend, boys!

Gales push Bales

What are you looking at….??   The power of the wind for one thing.    The story goes that this is the Medicine Hat area after the horrible and fatal windstorm that also blew through Camrose at the end of July.   Hay bales can weigh up to 1,000 pounds.   The ones in the pictures have have been pushed for miles, as if they were marbles.
