Ice–Not so Nice

Medicine River

Medicine River

Gorgeous shot — thank you to Rhonda for sending this in.  You are looking at the Medicine River near the beautiful town of Eckville (just west of Sylvan Lake).

The ice on the river got me thinking about the ice jams and floods in Manitoba.  Thankfully, we are not dealing with problems like that “here” in Alberta.  But there,  huge blocks of ice are preventing and obstructing the flow of water.  Everything gets backed up - causing the flooding.

Ice jams are influenced by:  Snowpack, How the ice was created on the river and its banks, How the river flows, and Weather.

Jams form during freeze-up and breakup,…but the worst flooding is usually caused by the breakup jams.

Here’s a great webpage to look at, if you want to learn more about the science of ice and how it puts the river and humans — in a JAM!

These 2 pictures are from Manitoba.  Selkirk is about 40k north of Winnipeg.  Morris about 50k south.

Say it ain’t Snow!  It was quick, it was dirty (pool that is), but the grumbling and complaining lasted all day.

April 15th “OH” 9 will be remembered for a fast, freaky, and feisty rain-snow storm.  So for your viewing pleasure, we have some pics sent in by dedicated, hard-working fabulous photographers.  YOU TOO can be featured, not only on this blog, but on BT.  Please send any pictures you have of Mother Nature to www.breakfasttelevision.ca

We thank Don for sending in these 2 pics from Sherwood Park.  Easter weekend was warm and sunny.  So he, like many others – put out the pots out along the fountain.   And then …. Tuesday happened.

At least it's not July!

It's April!

I chuckled when I saw these geraniums looking  longingling out the window.  Don has taken these plants from 1 inch seedlings.  They’ll get there — not to worry!!!

Thank you to Jill for snapping this shot.  It is calming, peaceful, and green.  This is the serenity of Waterworks park in St. Thomas, Ontario.  Serenity Now—Serenity Now!!!

Calm before the storm

Calm before the storm

Great shot.  This literally “is” the calm before the storm.
Colleen sent this in, she took the photo in 2007 before a thunderstorm.
Can you make out the anvil shape of the dark cloud?  It is ‘reaching’ to the upper left in the photo.
This is a Cumulonimbus cloud, you might have heard them referred to as: CB.    The tops of CB clouds have that ’anvil’ shape & can produce lightning, thunder, heavy rain, hail strong winds,…even tornados.
The higher they build, the more dangerous they become.  Some cloud tops have been as high as 60,000feet.
We would love to see any
photos you have of Mother Nature, her
creatures, or sunny or stormy weather.
But we also want you to be safe.  Please shoot with care!

I am such a sucker for a feel-good story.

Susan Boyle is a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent, and Ryan and I are hoping she goes all the way.

Mountain Sheep in Jasper

Mountain Sheep in Jasper

Today’s photo is sent in by Patrick.  He captured these regal looking Bighorn sheep while they were sunning themselves in Jasper.
These are ladies.  To a ram,…they are ewes.
Rams have massive curved horns, the ewe’s horns are short and spiky.
You are almost guaranteed to see the sheep on Highway 16 east of Jasper and along the Icefields Parkway near Tangle Falls.
They like to graze, and migrate from season to season between low grassy slopes and alpine meadows.  But they are always a hop, step, and a jump from their safety – the nearest rocky ledge.
Please send us your Fresh Air Photo(s)!
Anything showing Mother Nature, or her
creatures will do.

New Shirt Day…or in my case, New Sweater Day. It’s a day unlike any other. You’ve likely been there – whether it’s just after Christmas, days after a birthday, or maybe just on the heels of a successful shopping outing – rocking a new top adds a special swagger to your step. Whether it’s a daring new colour, a higher, crisper collar or even unexpected compatability with a favourite tie…a new shirt can make or break an otherwise-average Monday morning.

Work on Easter Monday provided the perfect opportunity to bust out my favourite new birthday gift (compliments of my brother Jonas and his lovely ladyfriend Tammy Cetiner). I remembered a piece in Avenue Magazine a while back penned by Sonic 102.9’s Garner Andrews, and thought enjoying my own “NSD” might be a good way to kick off the work week.

Turns out we had a pretty good show with the Edmonton Sun’s Graham Hicks, nutrition experts Karol Sekulic and Robert Rogers, and one of our favourite chefs Sergio Turlione, but I can’t take full credit for that. My fabulous co-host Wendy Sandwith brought a little NSD mojo herself (though with her new clothing sponsor, Yo Mama, Wendy enjoys NSD every day). Regardless of who truly deserves the credit for keeping the show on the rails, I like to think it was my new sweater.

On a side note, as you’ll see in the video below, I may have stepped out of bounds in describing exactly who Tammy was in relation to our family. You hate to heap pressure on your younger brother’s shoulders. I don’t know what came over me. Blame the new sweater!

Can you see his face looking to the sky?

Many people have their happy place.  Mine is a little mountain town about 4 hours west of Edmonton.  A few weekends ago, I was able to exhale-as they say–at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre.  A huge thank you and shout out to GM Steven Watters for providing five star fabulous food, service, and of course, lodging!
My guest was a friend of mine Janis Clegg who works for a wonderful charity in Edmonton.  You may have heard of Gateway Association for Community Living.  It provides services for people who have developmental disabilities,..services for those clients and their families.  Well as luck would have it, when Janis and I were in Jasper, the legends of the NHL were there for a charity hockey game.  I spied Dave Semenko right away — having cheered him on many times many many many years ago, when he was a Brandon Wheat King.  He agreed to a picture!

So THAT’S what it’s like to have a social life!  And I might add, what a ton of fun it is,…er, was!   On Saturday evening, I was out with ”The Usual Suspects” I work with.   One of my colleagues Derek Dotto was celebrating his 23rd!  Derek Dotto is our City Style reporter.   His fabulous features air every Wednesday at 6pm and every Thursday at noon.   Thank you to Suede Lounge, fun was definately had by all.

Here we have Asha Tomlinson, and beside her is Jeff Gonek–we love his t-shirt!  Next to me is Citytv reporter Meagan Kelly.  She works on our 6pm evening show ”Your City”.

The Birthday Boy(Derek Dotto) is in the middle, his best friend Lindsey is wearing white.  Behind Derek is Meagan Kelly and beside Meagan is Amanda Ferguson.  In front is Reid Wilkins.  Reid, Amanda, and Meagan are all feature reporters for “Your City” as well as for BT.

A kodak moment.  Whaaat?

It reminds me of that old Alfred E Newman phrase:  What, me Worry?   If you have no idea who Alfred E Neuman is,…sigh.
